DIY Beach Wave Spray – Pisces Mist

Interesting fact: I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for a year and a half right after I graduated from high school. Being from a town with a class size of only 55, a big adventure was on the top of my to do list. I was given the opportunity to play on the Hawaii Pacific University volleyball team and I instantly took it once I found out! I wanted to escape the cold weather of the Pacific Northwest that I grew up knowing and give myself a change of scenery. And you better bet that I spent every free minute of my time at the beach. Who wouldn’t?

I could go on and on listing the many things that I miss about living the sun-kissed, salty skin, sandy bum island life. But one thing in particular is the way the beach transformed my long mermaid hair that I had at the time into perfectly styled textured waves, with no effort at all. So I set out to find a natural product that would recreate this style out in the middle of the American Southwest where I currently reside.

Most of the branded sprays that claim they accomplish the beach wave style are loaded with alcohols and chemicals. Who wants to willingly spray any of that on their body? Not me, that’s for sure. I figured if the ocean itself can make this style possible, there has to be another natural way to get the same look. The homemade spray that I found works best for my hair contains the following ingredients:

• 1 Cup H2O (warm enough to dissolve ingredients)
• 1 tbsp Himalayan Sea Salt
• 1 tsp Coconut Oil
• 1 tsp Argan oil
• 5-10 drops Essential Oil 
• Dab of Pomade
• Spray Bottle
• Rocks, shells, or beach glass to decorate inside of bottle

Combine all ingredients. Stir or shake to dissolve salt and pomade. Spray onto hair. Scrunch. Enjoy feeling like a mermaid.

My morning hairstyling routine since I discovered this spray has been so effortless! I just spray onto damp hair, blow-dry a little to get the wind blown effect, tease a bit on the crown and go! A light spritz here and there keeps the do looking fresh and makes me smell like a bohemian goddess, so I’ve been keeping a spare bottle in my purse for on the go.

Different ingredients respond to hair types differently, so feel free to tweek the recipe to create the best spray for you. If you want to use almond or avocado oil instead of coconut oil, gel instead of pomade, or add more than what the recipe says, go for it! I just hope you fall in love with it as much as I did mine! Oh, and don’t forget to personalize your spray bottle. Get creative! I named my spray “Pisces Spray.” I’m a Pisces. Pisces is a water sign. Its’ animal sign is a fish. Eh, it makes sense to me and I love it and that’s all that matters.
