You know where you want to go, you see the destination off in the distance, and the minute you go to take your first step on the journey, you freeze.

Sound familiar?

Trust me, you’re not alone. The hardest part about making any kind of change in life is usually starting. The first few steps always seem to be the most challenging… but I’ll let you in on a little secret… they’re also the most important steps to take.

A lot of times what trips us up about getting started on a new path is the resistance we feel to being where we are actually at. We want to badly to skip ahead to the part where we have it all figured out that we forget that first we need to be where we’re at. In other words, in order to get to point B you must first stand firmly at point A.

Think about a time you’ve accomplished something you felt really good about. Even though the memory might be more focused on the finished product, there was probably a lot that went into getting you to that point of accomplishment. Go back and retrace all of the steps it took to get you there. It can be pretty enlightening to take note of.

I find, the best way to get over resistance and allow yourself to take those first (sometimes tough) steps, is to make a plan. Whether you write it down, draw it out, or simply talk about it with a friend, creating some sort of plan that acknowledges where you will make getting to your destination so much easier. Think about trying to get across the country without using a map. It would be really challenging right? You might know where you want to end up, but if you have no idea of where you are or how to get there it could take you a lifetime to reach your destination. Your life is the same way. Whether you’re working towards a new career or a lifestyle makeover, you need a map in order to guide yourself to your desired destination.

On the journey you might find you need to take a few unexpected turns, that’s okay, there’s no need to be attached to the original map you created. It’s simply there as an outline to guide you. “Rerouting” is never the end of the world. In fact, some of the best experiences can come from “rerouting” your path.

As long as you’re willing to be where you are and take the necessary steps to get yourself to where you want to be, I know you can go ANYWHERE.

Happy traveling!
